Fireworks Paintings July 14, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — mopsonthehill @ 8:25 pm

In case you are still hearing fireworks nightly like we are, here is a fun idea to do with your kids to keep the “summer magic” going….

Put a quarter-sized puddle of watered-down paint (non-toxic) on a piece of paper. Show your child how to blow the paint in different directions using a drinking straw. Add more puddles of paint as desired to make a fireworks scene.

Guessing Game July 13, 2009

Filed under: Uncategorized — mopsonthehill @ 8:23 pm

This is also a good game to play in the car or in a waiting room. It’s a great way to develop vocabulary and thinking skills too.

You say, “I’m thinking of…” and let your child try to guess what it is. Start with the basic category (is it a food, animal, vehicle, person, game, etc.) Continue to give clues (how it looks, how it feels, how it moves or what it does, where you might find it, etc.) until your child guesses right. And then don‘t forget to tell your child how smart he is! After he’s guessed several correctly, give him the opportunity to give the clues if he wants, and you can guess.

Super Sized Bubbles July 12, 2009

Filed under: Activities To Do with Kids — mopsonthehill @ 8:22 pm

Mix up your own bubble solution at home and see how big you can make them!

Combine the following:
3 cups of water (distilled is best)
1/3 cup corn syrup (Karo Light)
1 cup Joy (or Dawn) dishwashing liquid
After mixing, let settle a bit before using.

Try this: Pour solution into a clean plastic lid or tray. Dip one end of a straw into the bubble solution to get it wet, then blow slowly through the other end into the bubble solution.

Look closely at the bubbles. Can you see a reflection? Can you see swirling colors?

Make up some bubble challenges: Can you make two bubbles stick to each other (a double-bubble)? Can you catch a bubble on your finger? Can you pop one with your tongue?
